Labor Day Dinner
Hey Y'all,
Hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday weekend. I know that mine was absolutley amazing and so was my sister's. We have deceided to start writing about our adventures in food and life. We have grown up cooking in the kitchen with our mom & dad as well as my grandma Yeager. We have eaten at some fancy resturants, diners, cafes and hole-in-the-wall places. We love to expierence new things and cook either with a budget or blow a paycheck on something extravgent. We have thrown many bridal & baby showers, graduation & birthday parties, and just get togethers with the neighborhood; the food was always the main thing we loved doing. I am Sarah and I am 24 years old living at home looking for a job and has become the cook/shopper/maid for my parents. My sister Allie is 21 years old attends a University in Texas and loves cooking for her boyfriend Justin. We believe that you have a amazing dinners either on a budget or no budget but the one thing that remains the same is it must taste good.
This weekend we made Green Hatch Chile Cornbread, Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes, Tomatoe Salad, Garlic Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Apple Crumble.
Green Hatch Chile Cornbread was very soft and velvety when it came to the texture of the bread. The chile's were roasted so it added a smokey and spicy flavor to the cornbread. It was absolutly amazing and it would be an awesome with a bowl of chili this winter.
Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes were so creamy, velvety and smooth when it comes to texture. The potatoes are a fried chicken's best friend so had to have it along with our homemade gravy. Can ya say "YUMMY in my TUMMY!!!"
Tomato Salad is something that I created this evening with 2 tomatoes, garlic, bacon, red onion, basil, black pepper, white pepper, lemon & mayo. It was so cool, light and refreshing to do since the summer has been so hot here in Texas. I like using both peppers because they are both good as individuals but work wonderful as a pair. The bacon gave texture and smokyness to the food. Tomatoes were ripe and basil goes amazing with tomatoes. Fresh Basil is the best way to go but dry also works too.
Garlic Buttermilk Fried Chicken was absolutly wonderful. First we marinated it in garlic and buttermilk for 8 hours. Then breaded it in flour and slap ya mama seasoning and the fried it. It was so crunchy, moist and amazing. The best part of this you can pull it apart and drap it though the potatoes and gravy. OMG it is so delicious, I am salivating just thinking about it. You can make it with the whole chicken or just strips of chicken or legs or thighs. However you make it just make sure that it taste good.
Apple Crumble was tart, sweet and crunchy. I used Granny Smith apples because they hold up well to cooking and bring out tartness and sweetness. As you eat the crumble it starts out with a bit of tart but ends sweet. The crunch of the crumble was so good because it gave texture when needed but also gave a sweet surprise to the end of the bite. You can put ice cream or whip cream on top if you perfer but I just let mine as is.
This is what we had this Labor Day weekend and hope that maybe one of your weekends you can enjoy this meal too. Remember every good meal is going to be good if you just take the time and put a it bit of love into your food. What you will see in the weeks to come is us blogging about our food, what resturants we eat at and what entertaining we do for fun. Have a wonderful evening and look forward to next one.
